Yes, yes, I know. There was no Day 5. I admit it, I drank malbec and played on the computer instead. Today I probably should have done the same.
Yesterday, as part of her description of Day 5's assignment, Kelly Crosser Alge defined "comparalysis." I'm going to be bad and steal the image right off her website:
Isn't that just the truth? I'm suffering a bad case of comparalysis as I look at the photos of everyone else's sgraffito work, and today's efforts didn't help any.
Today's assignment was the same as Days 4 and 5: complete five 5-minute sketches in powder on glass, photograph them, and share the favorite. I first planned to focus on faces for all of the sketches. After the ridiculous and childish results of my first two attempts, I gave up on the whole face and thought I'd just do an eye. In five minutes I didn't even manage the iris. Then I thought I'd be kind to myself and see if I could just manage a coffee cup. Nope. These were all so awful I've already deleted the pictures.
I realized, not for the first time, that I don't sketch/draw regularly enough to maintain any confidence or competence in it, and as a result I get stymied when I do want to draw something. For my fifth attempt I took pity on myself and used a model for my sketch. I still didn't get much done in five minutes, but at least it bore a resemblance to what I wanted.
I actually liked it enough that I decided to spend a few more minutes finishing it up. It's still a rough sketch, but given that all I was using was a scrap of index card to freehand move the powder around, I don't think it's too terrible. I'll fire it for my sgraffito collection. I'm hoping distinct improvement will be apparent by the end of January.
