“Sally, are you in there?” Becca crouched low as only a four year old can and peered into the tarpon’s gaping mouth. The fish was longer than she was tall, and she’d jumped with glee when her papa landed it on the dock.
“Papa, do you think he might have eaten Sally? Maybe we could get her out of his tummy now.”
“I don’t know, honey. I don’t think tarpon eat dolls.”
Becca had been playing on the lake dock the day before when she had knocked her beloved rag doll into the water. The only way her parents could stop her howls was to tell her that maybe Sally would be in the tummy of a fish they caught. She’d been begging them hourly to go fishing ever since.
“But, Papa, you promised!”
Her father flinched. Remembering his own lost Teddy, he knelt down to gut the fish.
