It was a relief to take a short break from some work training today to write a short scene for this week's Visual Dare challenge posted by Angela at Anonymous Legacy - the photo below and whimsy. I thought it would be fun to continue the story of Mirela and Vaca - and now their new friend. You can read the first three parts of their story here, here, and here.
As always, visit Anonymous Legacy to read many other whimsical stories this week and to find out where Angela found this photo.
“Who are you?” the girl asked again.
“I’m Mirela. This is Vaca. Who are you?”
The girl’s face glowed through smudged dirt and dimples framed her smile. “My real name’s Deborah, but you can call me Miranda. Miranda’s a much prettier name than Deborah.”
Mirela couldn’t help but smile in return. “Miranda’s very pretty,” she said. “What are you doing here?”
Miranda’s smile faded. “My mama’s gone. Mean old Mrs. Heber tried to take me to the orphanage, but they wouldn’t have let me bring my Pookies, so I ran away.”
“Your Pookies?”
“Yeah. Come see.” Miranda tugged Mirela toward the door. “It’s okay,” Miranda said. “The guard’s not here now.”
Outside, they ducked into a small courtyard. Miranda skipped to the far corner where a box made of stacked bricks sat in the shade. Lifting the top bricks, Miranda said, “See, Pookies.”
Looking inside, Mirela saw dozens of snails.
