Angela at Anonymous Legacy seems to have an amazing ability to find very bizarre photos to use as prompts for her weekly Visual Dare flash fiction challenges. She coupled this week's photo with the word "emerging." Here's what I did with it. Don't forget to head to her blog to see how other people interpreted the prompts.
“What the hell?” I was kneeling on a rough stone floor. My palms were bleeding through my black lace gloves, but my knees had been protected by the tough damask of my dress. Damask? I don’t own anything made of damask – not a tablecloth let alone a dress.
I was in a room about the size of my master bath back home. There were no windows, no doors, no decorations of any kind except a large, ornate gold picture frame. The only light came from a candle lantern.
Turning to the frame, I reached out toward the center, and felt…nothing. I stepped closer to move the lantern into the void. I could see nothing above or to the sides, but below, almost too far below, I could see the top of a stairway.
I remembered seeing a bookcase ajar in Stephen’s library and wondering where it went. Shivering, I still wondered.
