“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” ― Edith Sitwell
With blizzards raging on the East Coast and normal massive dumps of snow here in Valdez, the above quote seemed particularly appropriate. I hope that wherever you are this winter, you are having the opportunity to share time (and good food) with friends.
We've been sharing our home with invaders this weekend. Okay, they were invited invaders, but they're making themselves at home nonetheless. We call them flying maggots. Those of you who are more generous would probably call them redpolls, but today, they were flocking like flying maggots all over our deck. Yes, yes, I put out black oil sunflower seeds for them - what's your point?
We've also had quite a few female pine grosbeaks this winter. I wonder where all the males are. In past years, we'd see more males than females, but this year seems to be different.
