Continuing my recent trend of being late, I'm finally posting my bit of flash fiction for Lillie McFerrin's challenge from last week. She gave "business" as the prompt, mostly to promote a new contest that challenges writers to create a piece of fiction that will fit on one side of a business card. I'd hoped to combine the two by writing five sentences in a business card-sized space, but I haven't yet figured out how to add an appropriately-sized text box to my blog page. I did, however, attempt to take advantage of the fact that it's Thanksgiving week for inspiration. Anyway, here's my story. You can read many other stories by following the links on Lillie's blog, as well as get more information on the business card fiction challenge.
Thankful
“I’ll be taking care of business, every day, taking care of business, every way,” she sang as she danced around the kitchen, plucking jars of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves from the spice rack. Spinning toward the refrigerator, she grabbed two eggs and belted out, “Taking care of business and working overtime.”
Focusing on adding the ingredients for pumpkin cookies to the mixing bowl, a smile played about her lips as she hummed along with the radio. It wasn’t often she had time to cook for fun, let alone have the house to herself so that she could crank up her favorite oldies music. Her husband had taken the kids to the park, and she was happy to express her thanks for their absence by baking cookies and mulling cider.
