Knowing that Lillie McFerrin would be posting another Five Sentence Fiction prompt, I'd been thinking to how I might continue Rithra's story (you can see other installments if you click on Rithra's Story in the topic cloud to the right). I'd come up with several scenes that seemed like they'd be a good continuation, but without knowing what prompt was coming, I didn't work any of them out on paper. This week's prompt, "detour," threw me a bit. While the following scene might not be an obvious fit, I think it works.
Detour
Rithra thought she was ready to tackle the difficult task before her, ready to keep Olgues from hurting anyone else. She had prepared the potion, she had called on the Great Mother to aid her in her quest, and she had found the calm center of her being, but before she could take action, she needed to talk with the mother of her body.
“Sweet child, wipe your tears and be strong,” her mother crooned while gripping Rithra’s hands tightly.
“But Mother, am I doing the right thing?” Rithra asked, swiping the backs of her hands across her cheeks.
Rithra’s mother nodded her head and said, “Women have always been under the power of men, but now is your chance to follow a new path, and to create a new reality for you and your coming daughter.”
