I am having way too much fun with these weekly flash fiction challenges. It's time again for Lillie McFerrin's Five Sentence Fiction challenge, and this week her word was "devotion." I decided to follow up on the story I started in response to last week's challenge word, "zombie." As always, you can follow the link above to Lillie's website to see how other writer's addressed this challenge. If you decide to play, too, be sure to let me know so I can read your story.
Ritha leaned heavily, letting the rough bark of the Mother Tree dig into her skin, absorbing Her strength into her spine. The terrible potion she had mixed, had imbued with herself as she muddled her saliva into the powders, was complete, but she would need Mother’s strength, too, to finish her task. Her hands stroked her swollen belly in an attempt to calm the life within, but her heart pounded harder as she relived Olgues violating her body. Closing her eyes, she drew Mother’s pungent scent into her lungs, and said, “Great Mother, I have devoted my life to You and to carrying out Your will. Please use my hands, fill them with Your great power, and allow me to help You protect all your daughters.”
