Sometimes, I worry that I'm becoming a bit too strange. I went for a walk in the pouring rain at lunch today (mostly because I couldn't take being indoors anymore) to Dock Point beach. Besides getting some fresh air, my goal was to gather some round rocks for a project I have in mind. I just needed one or two round stones about 2 inches in diameter so that I could crochet covers for them to make them look like urchins. Now this isn't an original idea. I found directions on another blog (here). They're really cute, and I just have to make one...or two....
The problems is, once I start beachcombing, I can't stop. Here's part of my haul from an hour's beachcombing in New Jersey a couple of years ago. Mind you, I have bags and stashes of beach glass, shells, and stones everywhere. This collection was just conveniently sitting on the side table in my dining room. I'll use them all in projects...sometime...soon.
It took a bit of looking, but I did finally find a couple of rocks that were suitably round. I wasn't ready to go back to work, so I wandered a bit further down the beach.
Wait, there's another nice rock.
Ooh, look at that one.
Instead of one or two rocks, today I filled my rain jacket pockets with seven rocks.
I'm done, I'm done, I swear.
Oh, but look, there's a piece of blue glass, the edges all worn smooth.
There's a piece of nicely worn pottery - a rare find for Valdez!
The algal slime on rocks does not scrub off easily, but I managed it. Here's today's haul:
Now all I need is some cotton crochet thread to make those stones pretty covers. I can picture in my head what it looks like, but I can't remember what it's called. Knit CroSheen, I think. Perhaps I have something in my vast fiber stash that will work. Just maybe.
