Mom said she'd send home some cotton yarn with Rowan next week, but I just couldn't wait to crochet a cover for a rock. You know, I told you about it yesterday. The idea is that a nice round rock is supposed to be reminiscent of an urchin when you're finished. Mine didn't quite turn out that way.
I wandered downstairs to my studio earlier to plunder my yarn stash; with that much yarn I was sure to have something that would work. There, perched on top of the first basket I saw, was a ball of handspun I'd made with a strand of dog hair and a strand of variegated silk. Very pretty, but a bit scratchy for the scarves I wove with it (I hadn't picked quite enough of the guard hairs out). Anyway, it's fairly fine, so I thought it might work. I found a size 2 crochet hook up in the loft (you didn't think all my supplies were in one place did you?), and immediately started following the directions (see the link in yesterday's post if you're interested). My yarn was clearly bulkier than than recommended since I reached the correct size in three rounds instead of five, but that was no big deal. I followed the finishing directions and successfully covered my rock.
The problem? No urchin was ever so fuzzy. This one would definitely be well defended against pillaging sea otters. One attempt at a bite and the otter would be gagging on a hair ball. Ah well, maybe this attempt will tide me over until I get some cotton. On the other hand, I have some very fine handspun silk somewhere....
