I just did a quick web search to see if there were any studies linking coffee and cancer. Interestingly, new research indicates that women who drink four or more cups of coffee per day over many years have a 25% less chance of getting endometrial cancer, the most common uterine cancer. I should be in the clear for that one!
Last week I wrote a blog post on the power of social media. The post was inspired by the help my Facebook friends (and family) gave me in winning the 2012 Cycle and Style photo contest (thanks again, everyone!). I mentioned in that post that I was going to be trying to mobilize the power of social media again. The time is now!
I've mentioned in several posts that I'm involved in the Relay for Life of Valdez this year as the sponsorship chair. Rowan and I are also co-leading a team, One Thousand Cranes. I set a personal goal of raising at least $1000 to support the work of the American Cancer Society, money that is used for cancer research as well as providing support needed by cancer patients. I'm asking you to help me raise that $1000.
With the Valdez Relay event scheduled for June 22, there are just 21 weeks to meet my goal. My brief search for links between coffee and cancer was prompted by a challenge I have for all of you who are willing to take it. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one who could manage to give up just one specialty coffee a week, my mocha, your latte, whatever it may be (I promise, your cancer risks won't significantly change!). For every $5 coffee you give up, you could set aside that $5 to support Relay for Life. In just 20 weeks, you'd have saved $100 to donate to my Relay goal. If just ten of my friends are willing to do that, I can easily exceed my $1000 goal!
So, will you take my Coffee v. Cancer Challenge and give up one coffee a week? Will you set aside just $5 dollars per week to help battle cancer? If so, let me know. For every person who takes the challenge and fulfills their obligation I will make a beaded awareness ribbon pin in the Relay colors of purple and white (similar to the sample I made for the photo below, but with darker purple beads).
So, are you up to the challenge? If so, comment on this post so I can start making your pin. Once you've saved the $100 (or you can just donate it one lump sum now, if you like) send it to me or donate it through the Relay for Life of Valdez website and I'll send you your pin, not to mention lots of thanks!
Of course, if you aren't interested in this challenge but would like to donate anyway, please do. The website and I will accept donations of any size at any time!
Thanks in advance for your help!
