Another weekend of traveling and running around without an opportunity to sit down at a computer and write a post in a timely manner. Rowan and I spent the weekend at her Grandma Carol's after she finished Girl Scout Camp on Friday. By the time we drove home on Tuesday she was an exhausted little girl. A week of new friends at camp and then three days with her favorite cousin, Mariah, were almost more than she could handle.
I enjoyed a couple of bike rides with Mandy, including my first trek down the Campbell Creek Trail through Anchorage from Tudor to Diamond. I highly recommended it as a lovely wend through the woods. We rode a bit over 15 miles round trip.
The best part of the weekend was visiting with my old-but-too-seldom-seen friend Roxanne. We connected through Valley Fiber Arts Guild spinning retreats, but neither of us has been to one in three years or more. She, her daughter and another family were camping at an old cabin on their farm way up Clark-Wolverine Road (near Lazy Mountain). Rowan and I stole a few hours to go visit. What a fabulous place! I think the cabin would make a perfect weekend artist's getaway for one - if one were willing to forego electricity, running water and could handle the wood stove. I'd love it. Here's a few photos showing off their 600 acres.
The cabin itself is quite old, but was roofed and fixed up just a few years ago.
Rowan and a new friend walking through the hay in front of the cabin. This photo looks up the valley from the cabin. The cabin's site is apparently the best place to get a view of most of the farm.
In addition to hay, Roxanne and her husband also raise elk and buffalo. The buffalo are the little brown dots in this photo. We couldn't go through the gates to get a closer look - they are definitely not tame animals! Maybe next time.
I'm pretty confident I wouldn't want to be a farmer (fishing is stressful enough), but I wouldn't mind having a piece of property like this to explore and enjoy. I might hit Roxanne up for a weekend away sometime.
