It just doesn't seem possible that it's already been 10 weeks since I started training for this year's Alaska Women's Gold Nugget Triathlon. While I'm thrilled that I've kept it up this long, I really thought I'd be much further along by now, especially in running since that's what I've been focusing on. Ah, well, I've been saying all along that it's most important that I keep moving and I still believe that's true, so in that regard I'm being successful. My calves and quads are really starting to look great, too. As Mandy's been known to say: those aren't calves down there, they're full-grown heifers!
I'll start with the swimming update, since there's nothing to report. Despite my desire to practice what Leo taught me last Saturday, I didn't make it to the pool once thanks to work and social obligations. Bummer!
Running was very weird this week. As always, I updated the specifics of what I accomplished on the Triathlon Training Log page of my blog. I was in Anchorage for a few days at the beginning of the week. I was a good girl and got up at 5:30 both mornings to run on the treadmill, efforts which went very well. I went out from the house along the highway on Saturday and Sunday, however, and it was as if my legs had never run before. Just brisk walks had my shins screaming at me, even though I stretched before I went. I'm not sure what the problem is, but clearly I need to at least walk nearly every day to keep my limbs limber.
Ah, biking, my true love. As I'm surprised to find every spring, my cycling legs come back very quickly. I'm already riding the distance I'll need to for the triathlon, so now it's a matter of further toughening my bum and improving my speed. No hardship that! Here's a picture I took of Valdez today when I stopped at Allison Point to stretch before I headed home.
And so I keep moving. One more week of travel for work and then I'll be able to really focus on training for the last three weeks. Whee!
