A few years ago I splurged on a Kindle and made a case for it that I love. When Thane gave me an iPad for Christmas, I knew I had to make my own case for it, too. Why have some impersonal mass-produced item when I can uniquely express my individuality?
I just finished it tonight. Here's the result - both sides.
This was definitely a "make it up as I go along" project. I started with some paper fabric I'd made a couple of years ago. It was made by layering muslin, torn papers, and cheesecloth, fusing it together with Golden Acrylic Matte Medium, and then painting it with teal acrylic paints and spray ink. For this project, I layered on more tissue paper with an ivy print, rubber stamped images on it, wrote words on it, and couched on some fun yarn. Then I backed it with fabric from an old flannel sheet and free-motion quilted it.
Here's a detail of the paper fabric panel that shows the components better.
Unfortunately, I cut the resulting paper fabric too small, so I ended up making a separate bag from the flannel sheet (with a zipper) and sewing the paper fabric panels to that before I sewed the seams. The handles were a last minute addition - I'd occaisonally wished I'd put some on my Kindle cover.
By no means is the bag perfect, but I do like it. It should adequately protect my iPad while being unique at the same time. Not bad, if I do say so myself - and I do!
